Growing Green Local Economy- North Kohala Food Forum

“The North Kohala community will produce 50% of the food it consumes.” This is a stated goal in the North Kohala Community Development Plan. The North Kohala community has many existing and emerging commercial and community projects that could lead to increased food self-sufficiency, the goal of the Food Forum is to bring everyone together for information sharing. The sharing of information is the first step in building collaborative partnerships towards a stated community goal.


There will be invited participants in the forum and the public will also be welcome, with provision made for including public participation in discussion. Forum participants have been identified from the following sectors in North Kohala:

  • Commercial Food Growers
  • Commercial Food Production / Value Added Products
  • Food Distribution / Retail to Consumer Sales / Stores-Markets-CSA’s-Outlets
  • Food Distribution- Wholesale to Retail
  • Infrastructure (Water / Land / Energy / Processing Facilities/ Certified Kitchens)
  • Commercial Consumers (Restaurants, Caterers, Institutional Buyers)
  • Education
  • Planning
  • Policy
  • Home Growers


  • The members of Food Forum steering committee are Bob Martin, Forrest Arnold, Shannon Casey, Karen Rosen, Guy Kaulukukui, and Andrea Dean.


    The goals of the North Kohala Food Forum are to:
    • Share information by providing a forum for communication.
    • Allow synergistic partnerships to form.
    • Identify the key barriers to local food production and working together.
    • Glean insight as to what the public is thinking about local food self-sufficiency.
    • Begin to get a “lay of the land” with regards to who is doing what and why.
    • Begin to track progress towards food self-sufficiency.

    06-22-09: Josh Tickell, Director of the film FUEL

    In this podcast I interview Josh Tickell, Director of the film FUEL. FUEL is a film about our national addiction to oil and the influence fossil fuel has on our health, our economy and our foreign policy. Josh Tickell uses his story to tell our story. The film has appearances by Sheryl Crow, Woody Harrelson, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Bill Clinton and others. The film lays out the problems and the solutions- highlighting the fossil fuel alternatives that will hopefully play a larger role in fueling our nation.


    FUEL Winner of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary and Josh Tickell was just named a United Nation Goodwill Ambassador.

    Gary Hooser, the real sustainability candidate getting geared up for 2010

    Today I met with Gary Hooser in Hawi. Gary is running for Lieutenant Governor in 2010. It may be a little early for some of us to start thinking about who we are going to vote for in 2010… but it is a great time to lend your support to the campaign and help get the grassroots network in place.

    Gary has a track record in the Senate of forwarding Sustainability legislation and we can expect him to help lead sustainability initiatives as the Lieutenant Governor.
