How Bright Are You? Still Confused About Lightbulbs?
Maybe I’m not that bright (not the brightest bulb, etc..), but I was still confused about the best light bulbs. What about the mercury in compact fluorescents? They don’t seem to last as long as they should, do they? There are new hybrid incandescents. What about LED’s? Compact Fluorescent Bulbs Shine in Tests on NPR’s All Tech Considered clears up all confusion about which bulbs are the most eco.

The mercury in CFL’s is a lot less than in the regular fluorescent tubes, which have been around for decades and decades and can be found virtually everywhere. In other words, it’s not a new issue, but still an important one. Recycling these bulbs should be manditory everywhere to prevent the mercury from getting back into the ecosystem, if you ask me. LED’s don’t have any mercury, but aren’t currently cost-effective or powerful enough. Give them time, and they’ll be great.
Also consider the amount of electricity we don’t have to produce when people use CFL’s. That saves more mercury going into the air, too! =)
