Butterflies and Horse Shit

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Butterfly on horse shit compressed
I was driving down my road and saw this butterfly enjoying a fresh pile of horse shit. It seemed like a visual metaphor for life. I certainly got a lot out of it. Here are a few life lessons to be gleaned from the experience:

  • We are divine butterflies who instead of being attracted to the beautiful flowers of life are sometime inexplicably attracted to the horse shit. Sometimes we roll around in it for a while.
  • When life gives you horse shit remember it can be beautifully adorned with a butterfly.
  • The County had just sent a street cleaner to clean my street- which in itself is funny because I live on a very off the beaten path, rural, half paved road- and some of the local horses got lose that same day and shit all up and down the road. Lesson? Don’t be attached to the fruits of your labor. Life is constantly in transition. Don’t be too proud of your cleaning job, it will be a mess again tomorrow.
  • Ah…. OK…I am out of life lessons gleaned from a butterfly on horse shit. Got your own???

    Sailing on the Maile

    Thursday, January 28th, 2010

andreasailing Sometimes my life has a dreamlike quality to it. In the midst of my daily juggling act to keep all of my balls in the air, very often beautiful little miracles appear. I say YES and find myself having a unique experience- surrounded by incredible natural beauty and fantastic people. Yesterday was one of those days. Artist and ecology educator Peter Antrim Kowalke asked me to join him and his Art In Sight Board of Directors aboard a sail on the Maile. The wind was light and we did more motoring than sailing, but the water was this incredible indigo color, we saw lots of whale tail, and the company was great. I always appreciate the shift in mental perspective that I get from seeing the islands from the water. It is like looking at life’s challenges from another angle to gain new perspective. Look from above, look from below, look from the water.

Snail & Slug, Love or War? Can Anyone Tell Me What is Going On Here?

    Friday, January 8th, 2010

    snailslug2

This morning in my garage, this snail was all over this slug. I was totally fascinated by the horrible and beautiful spectacle, but not being knowledgeable in the ways of snails or slugs, I have no idea what this interaction means. Can anyone help unravel this mystery?

Green Power Heroes at the Kona Christmas Parade

    Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Yes, the rumors are true. Last night the Green Power Heroes swooped into the Kona Christmas Parade to deliver a message to the people. Led by Green Power Girl and her new accomplice Green Flash- Mercury Man, Buddy Biomass, Anti-GMO Man, Sir Zero Wasted, Ezra, Back to the Green and Mighty Mene Man came to tell one and all to GREEN YOUR HOLIDAYS. Unfortunately, that evil Crimson Tide also showed up. She was encouraging people to use more wrapping paper, increase fossil fuel consumption, and to throw their plastic trash in the ocean. A Green Power Hero’s work is never done. In and out of costume, the Green Power Heroes are always working hard in service to the earth. See the secret identities of the Green Power Heroes revealed here. All of the GPH costumes were made from recycled and found items.
