BALLE (Business Alliance for Living Local Economies) Chapter forming on Big Island

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

There is a group of us meeting to form a BALLE chapter here on Hawaii Island. There is already a chapter on Oahu and a group of us will be meeting on Oahu next weekend to discuss how we can synergitcally launch BALLE statewide. There will be representatives from all the islands.

Learn more about BALLE.

Form the BALLE website:
The Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) brings together small business leaders, economic development professionals, government officials, social innovators, and community leaders to build local living economies. We provide local, state, national, and international resources to this new model of economic development.

We´re showing that independent locally owned businesses can go beyond traditional measures of success. We’re proving that these businesses are accountable to stakeholders and the environment. We’re helping these businesses flourish in their local economies. And we’re leveraging the power of local networks to build a web of economies that are community-based, green, and fair – local living economies.

Day 4: Andrea & Mary’s Girls Business Retreat Week

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Well the days are flying by. I finally got a new home page mocked up today. None of the info is correct, and there is still old stuff on the page, but let me know what you think of where I am going with the design.

We just installed Twitter Tools for WordPress and I am posting this blog post to test all of the cool functionality. Gotta go!

Day One: Andrea & Mary’s Girls Business Retreat Week

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

My friend Mary and I get together a couple of times a year to work ON our businesses instead of IN our businesses. Mary owns Akamai Promotions- she is a marketing and communications consultant. My company helps businesses and communities move towards sustainability. We have a packed agenda this week- On the top of our respective lists is a re-doing our websites.

But fun is always on the agenda too, and we started today with going to Lighthaus Camera. Mary needed a new camera for taking photos to add to her Maui Events blog. Regina at Lighthaus Camera rocked, she was so knowledgeable about all of the different camera options and helped match Mary with a Canon Powershot SX1 IS. I am so jealous, but at least I get to play with it. I am using an old Canon PowerShot SD500, which has been a great camera, but is on its way out.

After that we went to the new Target in Kona to suss out a new couch for my office. We also tried the out the new camera. Wow- it is good- it even makes the cavernous Target look great.

After a few more errands in Kona and a little relaxing time back in cool, breezy Hawi, we went to Rebecca’s for Mask Making with Robin Mullin. Robin is a great mask maker and showed us how to make masks. We will be out and about on Halloween wearing our masks.

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

In this podcast I interview Suzanne Case, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in Hawaii.

I spoke to Suzanne Case about The Nature Conservancy’s work with native forests and coral reefs as well as their focus on climate change and how it is all connected. Walking their talk, The Nature Conservancy, as a “green business” has just remodeled an historic building on Oahu according to LEED standards. The building was the first existing building in Hawaii to be remodeled and receive LEED certification.
